The ScanSnap S1300 rocks and this page doesn't do it justice.
BTW, the difference between the ScanSnap S300 and S1300 is simple.
S1300 works with PC and MAC. S300 only works with PC. Get the S1300.
It scans FAST and PDFs pop up on my PC immediately. It does OCR in the background while the PC is idle.
Great, great quality. My old Epson Perfection 1240 never scanned docs with such clarity.
One drawback...you can't use TWAIN with the ScanSnap series. So no "import from scanner" in Photoshop.
But this things will scan a JPG that can you later open in Photoshop. No worries.
As a designer, I'm not impacted since I rarely scan anything in color these days.
(It does scan in full color, btw...really nice quality).
I'll let the video show you real-world usage.
Personal stuff has been blurred. ;)
You can watch it at you of the tube
and search for the following kB7268TGEng.

Update 7/8/11: It's been working quite well. Software is poor, but I'm more or less used to it. To their credit Fujitsu has provided 10.7 driver updates, so I bumped the review from 3 to 4 stars.
I've been looking for this scanner for 15 years. It's good enough. It could be better, but it's good enough. If it lasts for two years I'll happily buy it again at the same price.
The hardware is essentially perfect. It's a bit annoying that you need two USB cables if you want to avoid the generic (mediocre) power brick, but blame that on USB. We should all be using either old style firewire or never coming USB 3, but we're stuck with USB 2. It scans both sides of paper at once. Yes, DUPLEX.
Although it's primarily a document scanner, I've used it scan color prints. The results were not professional quality, but they were darned good and fast.
The documentation is excellent.
The software is mediocre. Some of the bundled OS X software is so old it's non-native on Intel machines, fortunately you can omit that. Unlike the higher end machines you don't get Adobe's superb PDF/OCR combination (yes, once Adobe was competent), you get a much less efficient product called ABBY FineReader. Even so, it does produce PDF images with searchable OCRd text indices.
Most importantly, OS X Spotlight WILL index the text associated with these PDF image files.
The mediocrity extends to the ScanSnap Manager UI and workflow. Clearly this was a low bid contract. Don't expect much in the way of upgrades or future products. The scans, however, can be sent to products like DevonThink Pro ($150) for processing.
The scanner uses proprietary drives. This is perhaps the most lethal problem. If they're not upgraded we can be sure that within 3 years they won't work on OS X. Fujitsu, notoriously, does not provide new versions of ScanSnap Manager without a hardware purchase.
There are other problems with the software, but so far it hasn't been unstable.
In summary, 2 star software, 5 star hardware, gives a 3 star review. Surprisingly, I still love the product. If Apple were ever to produce a scanner, it would be a lot like this, though with a better power adapter and infinitely better software.

Customer Reviews

I have horrible problems with technology. I buy stuff, and after 4 hours of trying to get it to do what I thought it should do, it doesn't. HP does this to me all the time.
That is why I was floored when I got the S510 working in under 20 minutes exactly as I wanted it to.
You can take a bunch of pieces of paper, scan in both sides, capture it to PDF, OCR it, make it search-able, save it to disk... all by pressing one button.
I am using the ScanSnap filing system software that comes with it. It is essentially a glorified file explorer, except that it will do text in PDF searches for you based on the directory (Or Cabinet as they call it).
I set mine to extreme compression, and full resolution, and then the auto OCR. The software warns you that it will slow down scanning, and it does. It maxes out my 2-3 year old Dell D600 with .5G of RAM laptop, but it gets the job done. I can still use the computer so it doesn't block like I have read elsewhere (maybe for the S500).
This is an upgrade to the S500. Mine was black, not sure what's up with the white ones (maybe mac?).
It comes with Adobe Acrobat 8. This allows you to delete pages, rotate them, etc.
The OCR is amazing. Out of the box, it gets a little confused with i1IlL but so do I, bump it up to the max resolution, and the OCR is flawless.
I probably won't bother with the try ; buy Rack2 Filer. Google Desktop isn't essential for searching.
In the hundreds of papers that I scanned over the weekend, I may have had 3 jams which are REALLY easy to clear, and the software is pretty smart about it.
If I had a newer / heftier computer, things would go A LOT faster (not the fault of the scanner or the software though, I watched my CPU spike and slow during scanning ; OCR)
This literally was one of the only pieces of gear I have taken out of the box, and had 100% functional within the hour.
My .005% gripe; Be able to tell the scanner "Yeah, don't scan the backs of these pages" rather than navigate all through the menus. But disk is cheap, and I can always delete it with Acrobat later.
I'll recommend it to my friends ; customers.

For the price of the product, and the advertised speeds and functions, you'd think all of your printed material could be fed into this scanner. You'd be wrong. Snapshots will jam in this device. You are locked into Fujitsu's software for scanning. And, you do not get TWAIN drivers for the device, so you cannot acquire images from this scanner when inside a program like Paint Shop Pro. This is a single-purpose scanner: feed it all of your sheets of paper, and it will convert them to PDFs. If you have a lot of paper, then this is your scanner. If you have a lot of mixed media, this is NOT your scanner. Find another automatic document feed (ADF) scanner with TWAIN driver support.

My old HP scanner (actually, it wasn't that old) died a few months ago and it was time for me to get a new one. I accidently came across the predecessor to the ScanScap S1500 (the S510) last week while I was having my taxes done and was amazed at the speed and compactness of it. My tax person also gave it glowing reviews. As I wasn't aware that Fujitsu manufactured scanners, I thought I'd do a little research which led me to reviews of the S510 here on Amazon. Rather amazingly, I was very surprised to find that the S510 had so many extraordinarily high reviews (something that I don't believe I come across too often, especially with items such as scanners). One of those reviews mentioned that a new model (this one - the S1500) had just been released by Fujitsu. After some more research (it wasn't yet listed on Amazon), I found that this scanner was available and that it had many new features. As it turns out, I was the "first kid on my block" to acquire one and I'm glad I did! This machine is incredible!
The speed is absolutely blinding - an incredible 20 pages per minute but, because it scans both sides of a page at the same time, double sided documents scan at 40 PAGES PER MINUTE! Wow! As with previous models, this scanner is very small and appears to be well built: it's quite heavy for its small size and fits very nicely on my small computer desk. The scanning quality is equally spectacular - it scans up to 600 dpi in color, grayscale, and black and white and mine came with a good assortment of software (Adobe Acrobat 9, Rack2-Filer, and ABBYY FineReader). It scans documents beautifully! While I've been too busy scanning the billions of pieces of paper that have cluttered my life for years (this scanner will actually do that quickly and efficiently - something I've always just dreamed would be possible), I haven't yet tried to scan photos; I suspect that this scanner will do a good job but that another type of scanner would probably do better for archival purposes).
The only problems I've had were with Acrobat (I already have Acrobat 9 Pro on my computer) - I found that importing previously scanned documents into Rack2-filer were always listed in reverse order (ugh!) and Fujitsu tech support replicated the problem. They suggested, however, that I completely uninstall (not just repair) Acrobat and reinstall it. That did the job. BTW, I received great tech support from Fujitsu.
One interesting thing is that this scanner does not come with TWAIN drivers. Because of this, it is not possible to use it to the same extent as other scanners. Just the same, my reason for getting this scanner was to create .pdf files and this scanner does it like no other.
Overall, I'm thrilled with the Fujitsu S1500 - there is no question that it is the best one I've had (and I've had many) and is well worth the money (the S1500 is also the most expensive scanner I've ever purchased). I would recommend this to anyone who needs to scan documents.

I purchased this scanner as a first step in creating an electronic filing system for a home office. As I accumulated 20 filing cabinet drawers of paper documents going paperless seemed to be an answer.
Purchase of the Fujitsu S1500 was based on the numerous 5 star reviews. I am reasonably tech literate and have used the scanner for about 2 weeks. Here are my initial impressions:
    Pros -
    1. Speed: This scanner seems blazingly fast. Not a resource hog. Will scan duplex 20-25ppm at default settings on Win2K/1.8mhz/1gb platform.
    2. Scan quality very good at all settings.
    3. Size and looks: Small desk footprint. Looks great open or closed.
    4. Excellent paper feeding as long as documents are same size and 20 or greater paper weight.
    Cons -
    1. NO TWAIN DRIVER. I knew this going in but did not appreciate how much this would cripple the device in day to day use. Let me explain. I had envisioned creating a virtual file cabinet in my computer using Windows Directory/Folder/File system then scanning my paper documents into this system as pdf files. The problem is that the native Fujitsu software does not let you append an existing pdf file!
As an example take a file for utility bills. D:/Home Expenses/Utilities/Gas_Electric.pdf. You can easily scan in all prior bills(limited by 50 sheet ADF)and a pdf with one page for each bill will be created. But if you had more than 50 prior bills or when next months bill comes then the next scan you perform to include these new documents will create a new pdf and does not allow the option of appending this current scan to the existing pdf. As you can see one could easily end up with 1000s of individual pdf documents in your filing system. The work around is to launch Adobe Acrobat (not reader) and use it to open the old composite pdf and use Acrobat to append the newly created pdf to the prior file. This work around takes longer than scanning in a 30 page document. Twain based scanners easily work with existing windows file structure and allow you to append an existing pdf without invoking Acrobat.
    2. Paper catch tray very fragile and ADF paper support does not stay up (also reported by other reviewers).
    3. Double feed sensor: stops scan and reports. This is good. However you cannot retrieve the double fed sheet and place it back in proper order because the next sheet is already in the scanner and cannot be backed out. You have to either cancel the scan and start over or put the unread sheet back in out of order and then use Acrobat to rearrange the pages in the resultant pdf document. If you choose to cancel the scan the document that is halfway into the scanner will not be ejected and you need to perform an new scan to retrieve that sheet.
    4. A scanning run will only handle one size document at a time. In my experience if you have a mix of paper sizes you will need to do a scanning run for each paper size. Each run will generate a separate pdf file with you will then need to deal with.
    5. I paid extra for the scanner bundle with Rack2File software thinking it would help me create the filing system I envisioned. After loading and spending several hours with this software I don't understand how it works or what it is supposed to do. I consider the extra $30 dollars I spent for the "bundled" scanner money poorly spent.
    6. Other minor annoyances are:
While the scanner and snapscan software will run on older platforms the bundled software Rack2file and Acrobat require XPpro SP3 or newer. This is not clear from specs.
ADF will hold 40-50 sheets but output tray will start to jam after 20-25 sheets.
Documents printed on less than 20 paper and with printing on both sides the back side printing will show up on the front side scan. Many commercial invoices are printed both sides on thin paper.
Cannot set several default scanning profiles. You need to reset the scanner parameters each time you want a different profile.
    Bottom line:
This would be a 5 star low end document scanner if it only offered a twain driver. As it is I can recommend it only to prospective buyers who understand the full implications of this limitation. I thought of returning this scanner and getting one of the twain based models like the Epson GT S50 but at this point I have learned enough of Acrobat to quickly append my pdfs retrospectively.
I strongly recommend avoiding the "bundled" product since I don't see what added value the Rack2File software brings.
I considered giving the scanner a one star review just to get people's attention but the hardware is so good 3 stars seems about right.

The S1300 is definitely expensive, and it may seem unnecessary given that there are a lot of multifunction printers out there. I have to say though, that the software for it is awesome and that it has been an incredible time saver.
To give you a little background, I use to have a multi-function HP printer that had a flat-bed scanner attached. It had the potential to be decent, but the software SUCKED.
Every time I loaded a page on to my old multi-function printer, it would first have to take a test scan, then I'd have to preview the scanned page, and only then could I scan the document for real.
Each scan took about 10 seconds... It was agonizingly slow. So 10 seconds for the preview, a minute or two to change some settings, and then 10 seconds for the actual scan. I'd have change the settings for each page too. It was a serious pain. To scan a 10 page document would take about half an hour. Once the scans were done, I'd have to occasionally touch some of the images up in photoshop. That could take even longer.
Also the HP software runs a lot of useless background processes that steal RAM even when your computer isn't scanning stuff. It noticeably slowed down my CPU.
I can't speak for all the different brands out there, perhaps it was just HP. But unless you have a document feeder on your multifunction printer, you are going to be scanning one page at a time, and its going to take a while to get through something as short as a 10 page document.
My other beef with multifunction printers is that they often don't function well as printers either. The ink for the inkjet kinds are expensive, and I've never owned an inkjet printer that lasted more than 3 years.
I've found that laser printers last a lot longer, and their toner is cheap, but to get a multi-function laser / scanner with a document feeder, you are looking at spending a LOT of money.
Anyway, this scanner on the other hand, chews through documents. I put the 10 page document in the scanner, and press the "SCAN" button. That's it. From the moment I press the "Scan" button, to the moment that I have a useable, scanned pdf, it takes about 90 seconds.
The Fujitsu software automatically boots up (I don't have to actually run the program at all) and as I scan the documents it asks me where to save the file. The files are automatically adjusted for contrast and brightness (its not perfect, but its pretty good) and are saved as pdfs.
Another really cool feature is that the Fujitsu software can automatically convert scanned images with text into SEARCHABLE documents, something completely outside of the capabilities of my old scanning software. I open up the Scansnap program, type in a couple key words, and very quickly find the documents that I'm looking for. The search functionality was in the end what convinced me to buy this scanner.
Because of this scanner I don't ever fax things anymore. Its quicker to scan and email documents now, which saves a lot of time, and also makes it much easier to keep track of my correspondence with people.
The only downside to this scanner is that it quite obviously can't scan images from a book per say, like a flat bed scanner can. It can only scan loose paper.
I haven't found that to be a major downside yet, as over the past several months I haven't actually needed to scan an image from a book. I can see how for certain people (someone writing a dissertation), a flatbed scanner would be essential.
The one other thing I would mention is that I don't think that the Rack2file deluxe bundle is worth it. A friend of mine has the S1500 and it doesn't really seem to add a lot of useful functionality. If you're good with computers, know how file paths work, and have your own system of organization, you don't really need it.

First of all, the Deluxe bundle could be temporal, and after 40 days, you may need to formally buy the program. Secondly, I bought this scanner because of his dual platform, PC and MAC, and it works excellent on both, but RackFiler included on the bundle, this archival program does not work on a MAC!. Despite this , it is a great product. Simply, do not buy the Deluxe bundle....

Intelligent Detection Means Efficient, High-Quality ScansThe ScanSnap S1500 offers resolutions of up to 300 dpi--color or grayscale--without sacrificing speed. With the touch of a single button, you can scan up to 20 double-sided pages per minute.
You won't need to do a thing to ensure that your scans look their best, because the S1500 comes equipped with paper-feed detection to monitor page size, as well as color and black-and-white detection. Better still, the scanner automatically rotates, crops, or de-skews documents.
If a small document (such as a receipt or business card) is mixed in with a stack of larger documents, the ScanSnap S1500 can be set to automatically increase the resolution of the small document to help ensure that finer print is discernable. What's more, an interactive interface allows you to choose to easily and quickly bypass double-feeds such as taped-receipts on expense reports.

This package allows you to create digital IDs and implement password protection to keep confidential documents safe.
To convert your paperwork into editable text, try ABBYY FineReader for ScanSnap 4.0 PC Edition. Alternatively, use CardMinder 4.0 to quickly scan business cards, extract the contact information, and place it into editable fields that can be exported to Excel, Outlook, and other contact managers.

But if you had more than 50 prior bills or when next months bill comes then the next scan you perform to include these new documents will create a new pdf and does not allow the option of appending this more recent scan to the existing pdf.

I love the ScanSnap line and have had several models. I have adopted this product line at my workplace for personal scanners, and we have never had a failure. They're fast, reliable, durable and this model is no different. I've also owned the model slightly larger than this, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Instant PDF Sheet-Fed Mobile Scanner (PA03603-B005). I would definitely choose this model for the mobile traveling worker.
This is the first ultra mobile Scansnap, and I cannot convey how impressed I am with it! The device is literally about the size of two snickers bars put end to end. It's tiny, feels well constructed, and does not require external power. The software installation is quick is easy. It does not come with Adobe Acrobat Full version, like some of the older models used to include. It does not scan double sided as do many of the other Scansnap devices. If you've used a scansnap this one puts the brakes on and reverses you-- the paper actually feeds in the front and out the back-- Opposite of all Scansnaps. It works just fine once you realize what's going on there.
Those couple of drawbacks considered, if you are a mobile road warrior who needs to scan on the go, (signed paperwork, business cards, receipts, etc.) this is clearly my most preferred choice for a mobile scanner. The quality of scans is completely satisfactory, and honestly this little device does much better with tiny thin pieces of paper like receipts as compared to some of the larger models-- that are designed for a whole stack of paper-- and from time to time will skew a thin tiny receipt sideways and crinkle it up.
My thoughts on this model vs. the S1300: If you travel and set up at a hotel, temporary office or trade table type environment for a few days or all day, or need double sided scanning, the S1300 is a fine option. It's larger and takes more space if you're flying. If you travel or fly daily, or move from client to client during the day and want the smallest lightest option, this would be my recommended option. It would be perfect for sales forces, insurance company members, consultants, and others who go from place to place quickly, want minimal bulk, and the ability to scan a few documents quickly ; easily. If you need to scan small stacks of paper, go with the S1300.
As I continue to have the scanner longer I will plan to update the review. But at this point, the install was easy, the scan quality is good and use is easy, and the device is unbelievably small yet feels "not flimsy" and I couldn't be any more pleased with it's functionality and portability. If you have any specific questions or would like a certain additional feature tested, please leave a comment below and I will answer you ASAP.
Update: I have added a photo of it in my hand for size comparison. It's unbelievably trim!
Update: I've completed my first business trip with 13 pages of various sized receipts, full page receipts, baggage fee wide receipts, etc. I was able to scan them all in about 2 minutes. As well, a couple features I didn't mention explicitly above: The scanner auto aligns the images-- you don't have to worry about feeding them through exactly straight. Finally, the software "sits and waits" between receipts you feed through, until you click "finished". This is a FAR superior software feature to the larger S1300-- because it takes a few moments to put down ; pick up another receipt. The scanner sits patiently and waits for you to feed through as many receipts or pieces of paper as you want, with no urgency.
The scanning went perfectly and I'll post a few examples of the scans with no personal info on them as an example of scan quality. Since I've had the scanner I carry it with me in my backpack every day to ; from work and everywhere I travel with my work backpack. Still going strong with no issues.
Update: I recently needed to scan some very plastic like paper and it didn't want to curl upwards to come out of the scanner. I then learned that the back "door" on the scanner can very easily be removed so the paper feeds straight through without bending it. Another question, and another problem solved easily.
Update: I discovered that the rear door can easily be removed so you can scan hard cards like plastic credit cards, membership cards, etc. right through the unit without bending them at all! Also great for older style hard photos as long as they're not too thick.

    Length:: 3:32 Mins
Here is a review I did on the ScanSnap S1100! Hope this helps you guys if you think about buying this..!

Great tool. What a scanner should be. This is another world from the speed and software efficiency you have in the average scanner and All In One Printers. So I am happy to have both a AIO device and this great tool for document management.
    My use:
Now all the invoices and in general, all my printed documents are converted into searchable pdf into an easy to access archive.
I can recover from a fax or a printed document and edit it in word or excel tables or iWork and save a lot of time retyping
Business cards are archived in a short time and included in my address book and so also on my iPhone.
    PLUS
A single, easy to use, application manages the very fast scanning and efficient OCR conversion of printed documents outputting directly in searchable PDF, Word, Excel, email attachment, address book and VCF contacts. Also business card OCR is quiet effective and the limit is due to strange character and graphics and you can find on some more creative cards.
Compared to what you find in the AIO devices and average scanners, paper handling is superior and errors are avoided. In the case of skipped pages (Happens rarely) a sensor warns you and show you which page is missing.
    CONS
Only shortcoming is that Acrobat Pro is included in version 8.0 and not the last 9.0 but I suppose that this will change soon.

I've scanned approximately 15,000 pages with this scanner and it couldn't have been easier. I did get the occasional "paper jam" when the sheet feeder picked up the next page as it was feeding the current page. Clearing a jam is trivial: pop the cover open, remove the pages, snap the cover back, continue scanning. Considering I was feeding in papers from 15 - 20 years ago, I expected the pages to occasionally stick together. This scanner is worth every penny.
